Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested on Wednesday that people wear goggles or face shields to provide additional protection against the coronavirus.
Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, told ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton that wearing a face shield might be a formal recommendation at some point.
Dr. Anthony Fauci to @DrJAshton: "If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it. It's not universally recommended, but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can." https://t.co/SJPZn8fN6F pic.twitter.com/Ml87aBuclI

“You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye,” he said. “Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it.”
Fauci said that while they are “not universally recommended” currently, that wearing face shields or goggles will provide “complete” coverage.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already recommends wearing a face mask.
